Girsberg Castle (Kreuzlingen)

The first documented mention of Girsberg Castle dates back to 1473, when it was owned by Konrad Kupfermann. Over the centuries, the estate frequently changed hands. Its owners included Peter Breunli, Hans Lewenberg, and Ulrich von Wengy, a physician from Constance. In 1539, Nicolaus de Gall acquired the castle. Later, it passed to Junker Hans Nythart, whose widow sold the property to Georg von Knöringen. His widow, in turn, transferred Girsberg to Kreuzlingen Monastery, which built a chapel there. In 1567, the monastery sold the castle to Canon Sebastian von Herbstheim, who already owned Alt-Girsberg. In 1582, the Swiss Confederation declared Mittel-Girsberg a 'Freisitz' (free seat). After von Herbstheim's death, the Mayer brothers from Stein am Rhein took over the property in 1588 and sold it in 1594 to Canon Paul Alberti, who later became Bishop of Breslau. Following Alberti's death, the estate came into the possession of the Breslau Monastery, which gifted it to Emperor Rudolf II. The emperor then arranged an auction, where the Imperial Abbey of Petershausen in Constance acquired the castle. Due to financial difficulties, Petershausen later sold the castle to Junker Johann Anton Würz von Rudenz. His heirs, in turn, sold it in 1679 to Zwiefalten Monastery. In 1790, the monastery had the old castle demolished and a new one built, which served as a governor's residence. As part of the secularization, the castle fell to the House of Württemberg in 1803, which then put it up for auction. The Genevan manufacturer Jacques Louis Macaire de L'or purchased it. Later, his son David Macaire inherited the castle. One of his daughters, Amélie, married Count Friedrich von Zeppelin, and the couple received Girsberg as a Christmas gift in 1840. Their son, the famous Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, became the sole owner in 1870 and often spent the summer months there. After his death, his daughter Hella inherited the castle, and in 1960, she transferred it to her daughter Alexa. Since 1983, Kurt Schmid-Andrist has been the owner.

Girsberg Castle is situated in Kreuzlingen, within the district of the same name in the canton of Thurgau, Switzerland. It is located at an elevation of approximately 445 meters above sea level.

Today, Girsberg Castle is privately owned and therefore not accessible to the public.
