Glarisegg Castle

Glarisegg Castle is located between Steckborn and Mammern in the canton of Thurgau, Switzerland. At the end of the 16th century, Heinrich von Liebenfels zu Gündelhart erected a first representative building. In 1639, this had to be rebuilt after a fire. In 1774-75, the banker Daniel Labhart, who had become wealthy in Paris, had the current castle building constructed according to plans by Franz Anton Bagnato. In 1783, it was elevated to a free seat (until 1798). After several changes of ownership, the reform educators Werner Zuberbühler and Wilhelm Frei acquired Glarisegg Castle and opened a country boarding school in 1902, which was one of the earliest and most famous such institutions in Europe. School operations ceased in 1980. From 1987-2001, a Waldorf school was housed in the castle. In 2003, the Schloss Glarisegg project acquired the property with the aim of building a place of encounter that combines artistic, therapeutic, and craft activities and is supported by a seminar and course system.
