Gliwice Castle

The origins of the building go back to the city wall, which was built in the 14th century. A part of this wall (still recognizable today) was incorporated into the building when it and a defensive tower were converted into the residence of the city lord Friedrich von Czettritz (Zetritz). The Gothic building made of stone and bricks was erected in the 16th century. Later, the castle also served as an armory, prison and farm. At the end of the 1950s, the castle was renovated, rebuilt and given a tower and has been part of the Museum in Gliwice since 1959.

The Castle Department houses the Department of Archaeology and the Department of History. The museum contains the permanent archaeological and historical exhibitions, which deal with the prehistory of the Gleiwitz region, the history of Gleiwitz and industry in Gleiwitz around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Temporary exhibitions also take place.
