Gneisenau Castle

The first documented mention of a noble residence at this location dates back to 1161. Until 1338, it belonged to the Passau ministerial family of Gneussen. Afterwards, ownership changed frequently, including the Teuerwanger (1338–1370), the Harracher, and the Diendorfer (1434–1524). Georg Perkhammer (1524–1540) followed, as did Erasmus and Anna Kaplan, who sold it to Seibold Raiger in 1547. From 1556 to 1589, the Neithart family, originally from Ulm, were the owners; they adopted the predicate “von Gneissenau” in the 18th century. After the Neitharts, the Hohenegg family took over, followed by Hanns dem Pranter in 1597. Erasmus Märk von Haimerhofen owned the castle from 1602 to 1630, during which time it was spared from looting in the Peasants' War of 1626 due to the stance of Hans Christoph Mäerk. In 1630, it was sold to Christoph Heinrich Murhamber von Murau. From 1634 to 1767, the Counts Fieger were the owners.
