In the cadastral community of Gobelsburg, part of the municipality of Langenlois in the Krems-Land district of Lower Austria, is Gobelsburg Castle, a complex with a Renaissance core later baroque-modified. Its history is linked to Zwettl Abbey.

The origins of Gobelsburg Castle date back to 1074, when Azzo von Gobatsburg, the ancestor of the Kuenringers, had a stronghold built here. This was first mentioned in a Kuenringer document. After the founding of Zwettl Abbey by Azzo's grandson Hadmar I in 1138, he endowed the abbey with vineyards in Gobelsburg. The Kuenringers held Gobelsburg until 1314, after which it passed into the possession of various noble families. In the 16th century, the fortress was converted into a four-winged Renaissance complex. In 1725, Otto Achaz von Ehrenreich, Baron von Hohenfeld, commissioned the master builder Joseph Munggenast to baroque-modify the castle.
