Goldegg Castle

The origins of the first castle in Goldegg are not entirely clear, but its construction is attributed to the Lords of Goldegg. In 1323, construction of a new castle began after Salzburg Archbishop Friedrich III of Leibnitz, who was on the losing side in the dispute over the throne between Ludwig IV and Friedrich the Fair, had to permit the new construction. This new complex, which also forms the basis of today's castle, was completed simultaneously with the church and served to protect the connecting road between Pongau and Pinzgau. After the death of the last Goldegg family member, Haug von Goldegg, in 1400, the castle changed hands several times. Following inheritance disputes and an occupation by archiepiscopal troops, the castle finally came into the possession of Archbishop Sigismund I von Volkersdorf in 1455.
