Gottesaue Castle

The origins of the site date back to 1094, when Count Berthold von Hohenberg founded the Benedictine Abbey of Gottesaue. During the German Peasants' War in 1525, the monastery was plundered and damaged by fire. Between 1588 and 1597, Margrave Ernst Friedrich von Baden-Durlach had a castle built on this site according to plans by Johannes Schoch. As early as 1689, the castle fell victim to the War of the Palatine Succession and was destroyed by fire, after which it was only provisionally repaired. Another fire in 1735 led to a renewed reconstruction starting in 1743, with the building being designed lower and subsequently used as a granary. In 1818, it was converted into barracks, which in 1919 were repurposed into tenement barracks. After a brief period as a police school from 1935, it served again as barracks from 1936.
