Grabenstätt Castle

Grabenstätt Castle is a historic castle in the municipality of Grabenstätt in the Chiemgau region, which is now used as the town hall and guesthouse.

Grabenstätt is first mentioned in a document on June 8, 959, in a charter from King Otto the Great from Salzburg. The area around Grabenstätt was referred to as "comitatus Teginberti" (County of Reginbert) at the beginning of the 10th century. This administrative area essentially comprised old settled land. Grabenstätt, which was initially a Salzburg urbarium, returned to Bavaria in 1275. Although the area remained a Salzburg urbarium, it fell to Bavaria judicially and sovereignly. Grabenstätt Castle became the seat of an unclosed Hofmark, whose owners in the 18th century were the Counts of Rheinstein and Tattenbach. In 1803, the Hofmark was dissolved. A large fire in 1834 largely destroyed Grabenstätt Castle. Major von Mayerhofen, who restored the castle building and had a modern brewery built, exchanged the entire Grabenstätt estate for the post office and inn in the market town of Teisendorf with Philipp Fürst, postmaster and innkeeper of Teisendorf. Three years after a second large fire in 1862, Baron Ludwig von Finster acquired the property. Subsequent owners of the castle and brewery were the Counts of Löwenstein-Scharffeneck and the Mayer family from Wasserburg. After the First World War and the decline of the brewery, there were several changes of ownership before Clemens Freiherr von Wrede acquired the property in 1924. Finally, in 1982, the municipality of Grabenstätt bought the castle from the von Wrede family. It was converted into a town hall with a guesthouse and was occupied by the municipal administration in December 1995.
