Gränsö Castle, a historic estate near Västervik in Sweden, looks back on an eventful history stretching back to the Middle Ages. Although repeatedly redesigned and even destroyed by fire, it was always rebuilt and today stands as an impressive testament to past eras.
History+
The origins of Gränsö Castle date back to the Middle Ages. In 1807, Olof Johan Risselskiöld erected a main hall made of wood, which laid the foundation for the present estate. Throughout the 19th century, the castle underwent several expansions. A comprehensive renovation began in 1992, but just one year later, in 1993, a devastating fire destroyed the entire building. Despite this setback, the castle was rebuilt as early as 1994.
