Granhammar was first mentioned 1299. 1344 the manor was owned by the Uppsala Cathedral. In the 15th Century the manor was owned by Arent Persson (Örnflycht), who was a close friend of Gustav Vasa. Thereafter, the property transferred to the Rosencrantz, Soop, Wachtmeister, Fersen, von Lantingshausen und Rålamb.

The castle was built from 1748-52 by Baron JA Lantinghausen on the walls of an old manor house dating from the 16th Built century.
