History+

The construction of Granitz Castle took place between 1838 and 1846. The builder was Prince Wilhelm Malte I zu Putbus, who had the plans of the Berlin architect Johann Gottfried Steinmeyer implemented. Originally, a small hexagonal belvedere stood on this site. The castle once served as a hunting lodge and was a meeting place for European nobles and personalities such as Frederick William IV and Otto von Bismarck. It remained in the possession of the Putbus family until 1944, before being placed under Nazi administration and later expropriated as part of the land reform. Since then, it has been state-owned and is used as a museum. After World War II, many furnishings were lost, and art treasures were moved to Berlin. In the early 21st century, the complex underwent renovation.
