Greifenstein Castle

Schloss Greifenstein, a magnificent Renaissance palace, stands proudly on a rocky outcrop overlooking the the Drava Valley in Carinthia, Austria. Its history dates back to the 12th century, when a medieval fortress was first established on this strategic site. Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous transformations, reflecting the changing architectural styles and the fortunes of its various owners.

The castle as we know it today largely owes its appearance to the Aichelburg family, who acquired the property in the 16th century. In 1556, under the patronage of Balthasar von Aichelburg, the medieval fortress was transformed into a splendid Renaissance palace. The Aichelburgs, a prominent Carinthian noble family, invested heavily in the reconstruction, adding elegant arcaded courtyards, grand halls, and ornate frescoes that still adorn the castle's interiors.

Following the Aichelburgs, Schloss Greifenstein passed through the hands of several other noble families. Among them were the Lords of Grotta, who made their own contributions to the castle's architecture. In the 17th century, a Baroque chapel was added, featuring a richly decorated altar and intricate stucco work. The castle also saw the construction of new defensive structures, reflecting the turbulent times of the Counter-Reformation.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Schloss Greifenstein experienced a period of decline. The castle was no longer the primary residence of its owners and gradually fell into disrepair. However, in the early 20th century, a new era began for Greifenstein. The castle was acquired by a private foundation, which undertook extensive restoration efforts to preserve its historical and architectural heritage. Today, Schloss Greifenstein stands as a testament to centuries of Carinthian history, offering visitors a glimpse into the lives of its noble inhabitants and the grandeur of its past.

The Arcaded Courtyards
