Grochwitz Castle

A manor house in Grochwitz is already mentioned in the 14th century. In the 15th-16th century, the estate was owned by the von Frauenhorst family. After this, ownership changed in 1550 to Cuntz von Mila, in 1589 to Albrecht von Wuthenau, in 1697 to Karl Gottlob von Römer, and in 1730 to Friedrich Wilhelm von Brühl. From 1732–38, the manor house was rebuilt by Heinrich Graf von Brühl according to plans by Johann Christoph Knöffel. In 1756, the estate burned down during the Seven Years' War and was subsequently rebuilt. In 1781, ownership changed to the von Schenk family. In 1783, the estate burned down again and was rebuilt. After this, ownership changed in 1789 to Christoph Wedig von Barner, in 1804 to the von Dabrowski family, in 1817 to the Barons von Palombini, and in 1939 to Dr. Unterkofler. He was dispossessed and expelled by the communists in 1945. After this, the castle served as a boarding school and LPG (agricultural cooperative). From 1977-1991, the "Young Natural Scientists and Technicians" station was housed in the castle. After reunification, the castle was renovated several times.
