Grombach Castle

The origins of Grombach Castle lie in a moated castle built by local nobility in the 13th and 14th centuries. Later, the complex came into the possession of the Lords of Helmstatt as a fief. In 1498, Erhard von Helmstatt sold the village, along with the castle and its sovereign rights, to Stephan von Venningen. The castle suffered damage in the Landshut War of Succession in 1504 and may have been affected again during the Peasants' War in 1525. By 1544, the current main building, a Gothic residential structure, and an octagonal stair tower were newly built, and later underwent several alterations. The round defensive tower and the curtain wall are still relics of the original castle complex.
