Groß Castle

Groß Castle on the northern edge of the village – a small, one to two-story three-wing complex from the early Renaissance – was originally surrounded by a moat and fortified. The former manorial seat was first mentioned in a document in 1231 as the property of a noble family, was owned by the Gilleis family in 1591, the Herberstein family in 1610, the Dietrichstein family in 1675, and from 1858 by the Schönborn-Puchheim family. The exterior was probably largely built in various successive construction phases in the first half of the 16th century. The entire complex is covered with sgraffito rustication from the first half of the 17th century. On the southern main facade, the central axis and two round corner towers, reduced to building height, project slightly. Between them and on the flanks, the upper floor is partly set back somewhat over crenellated steps. The round-arched portal in the central part is supported by later inserted beams. The former man-gate is walled up. The window sills date from two construction phases of the 16th century. The courtyard is reached via a barrel-vaulted passage from the 16th century, opened by a chamfered round-arched portal. In the opposite section are double-story arcades, largely walled up by a staircase installation, with pillars on the ground floor and octagonal supports transitioning into imposts on the upper floor, dating from the first half of the 16th century. A stair tower from the first half of the 16th century rises at the east wing. The western economic wing is broken by a rod-shaped portal from the second quarter of the 16th century and by broad windows.
