Groß Schönebeck Castle
The listed hunting lodge Groß Schönebeck is located in the district Groß Schönebeck of the Brandenburg municipality Schorfheide in the Barnim district.
The construction of the early Baroque hunting lodge, originally surrounded by a moat, was started at the instigation of the Great Elector from 1660 in place of a destroyed castle and was only completed under King Frederick William I.
Located on the edge of the Schorfheide hunting ground, which was already highly valued by the regional rulers at that time, the castle served as a residence for the royal majesties and their hunting guests. A valuable stucco ceiling in the hall of the upper floor dates from this period.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the castle was renovated in a Gothic style. Later it served various forestry administration institutions. Since 1991, the former hunting lodge has housed the Schorfheide Museum.
