Grossau Castle

The origins of settlement in Grossau date back a long time, with an older castle located west of the current castle, first mentioned in a document in 1204. However, this fell into disrepair in the 15th century and was described as a ruin in 1574. In the 16th century, the current moated castle was built elsewhere in the village. In 1856, the first agricultural school in Lower Austria was founded in the castle's outbuildings by the Barons von Villa-Secca. During World War I, on August 29, 1914, the then-vacant castle was used as an internment camp. During this time, it changed ownership, passing to Baron Robert Freiherr Klinger von Klingerstorff, which led to the relocation of the camp hospital there to Drosendorf.
