In the municipality of Grosskirchheim in Carinthia, Austria, the double castle complex Grosskirchheim stands at an altitude of approximately 1011 meters above sea level. Its history is closely linked to the region's mining industry.

History+

The first documented mentions of a “locus Chyrichaim” date back to 1150. In 1157, Reginher von Steierberg and his wife Petrissa donated their property “apud Chyrichaim” to Admont Abbey. Following the Peace of Pusarnitz in 1460, the estate passed to the Habsburgs. With the flourishing of precious metal mining towards the end of the 15th century, the castle “Krchheimegg” served as the official residence for the mining judge.
