Großkmehlen Castle

Around the year 1200, fortifications were built in the region between Pulsnitz and Schwarze Elster to protect the borders of the March of Meissen and Upper and Lower Lusatia. The original castle complex in Großkmehlen was built on a castle hill on the Meissen side of the Pulsnitz. Later, the complex developed into a stone building with a residential tower, palas, and gate tower, enclosing an inner courtyard. From the 14th century, the von Lüttichau family was enfeoffed with the manor. After an inheritance division in 1540, the castle complex was divided. Today's castle is a Renaissance building from the mid-16th century, incorporating parts of the predecessor building. In the 17th century, renovations took place, during which baroque stucco work was applied on the first floor, presumably by Italian artists.
