Großkühnau Palace, part of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, is a neoclassical building in Saxony-Anhalt. Built in the late 18th century, it is integrated into a park landscape on Lake Kühnau, which forms the western boundary of the Garden Realm.

History+

The construction of Großkühnau Palace took place in 1780. The patron was Prince Albert Friedrich von Anhalt-Dessau, a son of Leopold II. The interior of the palace was initially modest, with only the ballroom on the first floor adorned with decorative paintings. The palace is part of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, which was created under the regency of Prince Leopold III Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau in the second half of the 18th century. The complex is complemented by Kühnau Park, which was laid out on the southern shore of Lake Kühnau and on artificial islands, featuring sculptures and small architectural elements. The Neo-Romanesque-Byzantine Großkühnau Church, built between 1828 and 1830 and considered the first of its kind in Germany, was also incorporated into the design.
