Castle Großlobming

An estate in Lominichakimunde is already mentioned in a document from the Archbishop of Salzburg in 927. The current castle is the successor to a fortified building that likely existed around 1050.

In the 12th century, this was held as a free property by the knightly Lords of Lobming. They first appear in 1135 with Helmbrecht von Lobming. The last castellan from the Lobminger family was Hans von Lobming. He died after 1430. The castle was confiscated by the sovereign and granted to Wolfgang Zach in 1450. Already in the 12th century, a simple farmstead existed below the castle, which was later expanded into a palace. It had been sold to Hans Erasmus von Saurau in 1499.

To distinguish between the two buildings, the old castle was called Zachenschloss and the former fortified farmstead Saurau'sches Schloss. The Zachenschloss remained with the Zach family until Carl Sigmund Zach sold it to Erasmus Graf Saurau in 1645. Thereafter, it served as the administrative seat of the lordship. Beatrix Anna Gräfin Saurau sold Großlobming to her son-in-law Sigmund Graf Welserheim in 1730. His son Leopold sold the lordship in 1755 to the Spital am Pyhrn Abbey, from which Franz Josef Graf Wurmbrand acquired it in the same year. The Wurmbrands had an extensive new building erected.

In 1827, Großlobming came into the possession of the Sessler-Herzinger family. The heirs of Baron Viktor Felix von Sessler-Herzinger were his nephews, Barons Dr. Adalbert and Hans von Wimpffen. In 1979, the Wimpffen family sold the castle to the State of Styria. The state restored the building and erected a modern extension by 1981, which has since served, together with the main building, as a vocational school for agriculture and nutrition, including a boarding school.
