Großsachsenheim Castle

The origins of Großsachsenheim Castle date back to the 13th century, when it served as the seat of the Lords of Sachsenheim. A keep on the south wing from this period is verifiable. Following a fire in 1542, a reconstruction was completed in 1544 under Reinhard von Sachsenheim. Older building parts were integrated into the new structure, which presents itself as an almost regular dodecagon with a square inner courtyard. An old legend attributes the fire to the “Klopferle,” a Gothic stone figure on the bridge. In 1823, another fire destroyed the south wing.
