Grünhaus Castle (Mertesdorf)

The Maximin Grünhaus winery in Grünhaus on the Grüneberg near Trier is located in the municipality of Mertesdorf (Ruwer wine region) in the German Mosel growing area.

The origins of viticulture on the Grüneberg near Trier date back to Roman times. In 633, Dagobert I gifted the possessions on the Grüneberg to the St. Maximin monastery in Trier. This possession was confirmed by Otto I in 966. Until 1802, Maximin Grünhaus was managed by the Benedictine abbey.

After the secularization under Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte, the estate was under French administration until 1810. In that year, after an auction, the first secular owner bought the winery, which then passed to Baron Carl Ferdinand von Stumm-Halberg in 1882 and later to the von Schubert family.

Since 1981, the estate has been managed by Dr. Carl-Ferdinand von Schubert (Winemaker of the Year according to Gault-Millau and numerous other awards).

The enclosed vineyard Maximin Grünhaus on the sloping to steep south-facing slope of the Grüneberg consists of the three individual sites Bruderberg, Herrenberg, and Abtsberg. On 34 hectares of vineyards, only Riesling is cultivated on red and blue slate weathered soils.

Grünhaus Castle emerged from a manor of the Trier Abbey of St. Maximin and dates back to the 16th century. It consists of the main house and the Marienburg, which was built in the 19th century.

Weddings can be performed in the castle premises by the Ruwer registry office.

In the immediate vicinity, the Protestant Johannes Church was built in the mid-20th century.

The winery also includes the farm buildings at the former Grünhaus-Mertesdorf train station. The former railway line is now the Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Path.

The former Grünhäuser Mill on the Ruwer now houses a restaurant.
