In Mertesdorf, Grünhaus Castle is a historic estate in Rhineland-Palatinate, known for its long tradition in viticulture. Originally developed from a manor of the St. Maximin Abbey in Trier, it is now a winery and a venue for special occasions.

History+

The origins of viticulture on the Grüneberg date back to Roman times. In 633, Dagobert I gifted the lands to St. Maximin Abbey in Trier, a possession confirmed by Otto I in 966. Until 1802, the estate was managed by the Benedictine abbey. Following secularization under Napoleon Bonaparte, it remained under French administration until 1810, before passing into secular ownership.
