Grüningen Castle

The castle was built as a fortress before the year 1229. In its early days, it was owned by the Barons of Regensberg. During the time of the Bailiwick of Grüningen, it was the seat of the bailiffs appointed by Zurich. Of the original complex, only the palas and the keep, which was dismantled to its height in 1783, remain. During a fire at the church on October 19th to 20th, 1970, the castle was also affected. The roof truss and the top floor had to be renewed as a result.

On the site of today's Reformed Church of Grüningen, there had been a castle chapel since at least 1396, which was extended in 1610 - the year of its elevation to a parish church - and again in 1649. In 1782, this was demolished and, by the following year, the church, largely still existing in this form today, was built in its place in the early classical style. In the 1970 fire, it burned down to its outer walls and was rebuilt from May 1975 to March 1977.
