In the municipality of Grüningen, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland, Grüningen Castle, originally a medieval fortress, stands at an elevation of approximately 485 meters above sea level. It is now privately owned.

History+

The castle's origins date back to before 1229, when it was built as a fortress. In its early years, it was owned by the Barons of Regensberg. Later, it served as the seat of the bailiffs appointed by Zurich during the Grüningen bailiwick period. Of the original castle complex, only the palas and the keep remain, with the latter having been reduced in height to that of the palas in 1783.
