Gschwendt Castle

The first documented mention of the Gschwendt lordship dates back to 1308, when it was granted as a Passau fief to Heinrich der Gwschendtner or Heinrich von Volkenstorff. In 1492, Gschwendt came into the possession of the Losensteiner family, which also included the regional court. By the end of the 16th century, the moated castle was listed as a place of refuge and defense in times of war due to its defensive capabilities. A battle of the Great Peasant War took place near the castle in 1626, where the peasants under Achaz Wiellinger were defeated by imperial troops under Colonel Löbl. After the male line of the Losensteiners died out in 1692, the inheritance passed to Maria Katharina, who was married to Prince Johann Weikhard von Auersperg.
