Gültz Castle
Gültz Castle is a manor house in Gültz in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Gültz was, with few interruptions, an estate of the Pomeranian branch of the Maltzahn family since the 15th century. In the 19th century, a landscape park in the English style was laid out according to a design by Peter Joseph Lenné. Between 1868 and 1872, Helmuth Ludwig Wilhelm von Maltzahn had the neoclassical manor house built. After the Second World War, the Maltzahns were dispossessed and the manor house was plundered.
During GDR times, the castle housed an agricultural vocational school with a boarding school. Between 1980 and 1988, the building underwent extensive renovation. Another renovation in connection with the establishment of a hotel took place in 1999. In 2004, the building was foreclosed.
Layout+
The architect of the building was the Mecklenburg master builder Georg Daniel. The L-shaped manor house is located on the eastern edge of the former estate. The two-story building, with fourteen axes on the courtyard side, has a striking three-axis and three-story central risalit, in whose gable triangle the Maltzahn coat of arms is located. A columned portico with an altana above served as a covered driveway. A three-story tower is located on the southern edge of the courtyard side.
Behind the three-axis risalit on the northern edge of the courtyard side is the large ballroom, which has a valuable colorful-golden stucco ceiling and two large original mirrors. In the entrance hall, a coffered ceiling is supported by two columns. The upper floor is accessible via a spiral staircase.
The two-story south wing, which adjoins the tower, has a two-axis central risalit. A winter garden used to be located on a fieldstone plinth in front of the tower. Most recently, it served as seating for a café.
North of the building is the ruin of the former poultry house. It was built as a half-timbered structure on a high cellar made of worked fieldstones. A little further from the manor house stands an old ice cellar.
The landscape park designed by Lenné, which contains two ponds, extends south and east of the manor house. The tree population includes red horse chestnuts, magnolias, plane trees, and pyramidal oaks. South of the larger pond is an oval of 12 small-leaved lime trees.
