Guggenberg Castle is a hilltop castle above the Wertach Valley, a striking example of late Gothic architecture that has been adapted. Located in the Augsburg – Western Forests Nature Park, this three-winged complex is in private ownership.

History+

The first documented mention of Guggenberg Castle dates back to 1441, when it served as a forester's lodge for the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg. The Augsburg patrician family von Langenmantel, who held the fief from the Bishops of Augsburg, erected a manor house on the site. Between 1520 and 1565, the current quadrangular courtyard complex was built. Until the 16th century, the Augustinian canons of St. George held Guggenberg as a fief and used the castle as an exile from 1537 to 1548, after the celebration of Catholic Mass had been forbidden to them in Augsburg in 1534. In the 18th century, the von Bally family operated a cotton spinning mill on the castle grounds.
