Guntersdorf Castle

The Ruckendorfers are known as the first owners of the dominion. In 1295, Ulrich von Ruckendorf pledged his third of the then castle to Eberhard von Wallsee. Guntersdorf was at this time a fief of Melk Abbey.

Eberhard von Wallsee gradually managed to acquire the rest, so that in 1314 he was enfeoffed with the entire dominion. In 1336, the Bohemian King Johann conquered Guntersdorf for a few months. The Wallsees remained in possession of Guntersdorf until 1476. As they did not live here, they usually appointed burgraves as administrators. In 1415, Duke Albrecht V had endowed the dominion with blood jurisdiction. Reinprecht V von Wallsee sold Guntersdorf to Ulrich Rechlinger, who, however, soon died.

In 1498, the Abbot of Melk enfeoffed Kaspar von Roggendorf with the castle. Georg von Roggendorf is to be regarded as the builder of the present castle, who in 1536 had the medieval castle transformed into a habitable Renaissance castle. From 1538 it was free property, as the abbey had renounced its feudal sovereignty. In 1546, the heavily indebted Guntersdorf was sold to Baron Johann von Weisspriach. Through the marriage of his daughter, it came into the possession of Christoph von Teufel.

Since 1703, the castle has been owned by the Barons von Ludwigstorff. The devastations of the occupation period after the Second World War could only be remedied after decades. The castle serves as a residence and administrative center for the associated estate.
