Gurtweil Castle

The roots of the current castle date back to 1646, when the predecessor building served as a provostry of St. Blasien Monastery. A fire completely destroyed the then moated castle on May 13, 1660. Within just four years, St. Blasien Monastery erected the current complex on the same site. Between 1720 and 1747, the castle underwent extensions and alterations, including an orangery, which now serves as the castle chapel, as well as the creation of gardens and a large barn. The interior was once characterized by splendor, as evidenced by the Renaissance tiled stove. After the secularization of St. Blasien Monastery, the castle was sold and temporarily even served as a hospital.
