Gutenberg Castle

The origins of the castle area date back to the first half of the 12th century, when it was owned by the high-ranking lords of Feistritz. The first stone defensive structure was likely built before 1144 by Juta von Feistritz and her husband Leutold II von St. Dionysen, with the then lady of the castle giving the castle its name. Leutold III, her son, undertook initial expansions around 1185. After his death in 1189 and the passing of his widow, the property fell to his son-in-law Herrand von Wildon in 1210. The Wildoners rarely used the castle and appointed burgraves. Shortly after 1261, Gutenberg came as a dowry to Adalbero von Kuenring-Dürnstein, whose son Leutold sold it in 1286 to the brothers Friedrich, Ulrich, and Heinrich von Stubenberg. Although Friedrich von Stubenberg had to surrender many castles to Duke Albrecht in 1292, he was allowed to keep Gutenberg.
