Gutenbrunn Castle

To be privately owned

Gutenbrunn Castle, also known as Louisenthal Castle, is a historic castle complex dating back to the early 18th century. It is located in Homburg-Wörschweiler in the Saar-Pfalz district, Saarland, Germany, situated at an elevation of approximately 230 meters above sea level. The property is currently privately owned and is a protected architectural monument.

History+

The history of Gutenbrunn is closely linked to a healing spring discovered in 1624, which was forgotten during the Thirty Years' War. From 1671 onwards, a spa operation developed, attracting numerous bathers. Duke Gustav Samuel Leopold of Pfalz-Zweibrücken began constructing the small Louisenthal Castle with a chapel in 1723. He gifted the estate to his wife, Luise Dorothea, Countess of Hoffmann, as a morning gift. The Walpurgis Chapel, consecrated in 1725, later served as a church for an independent Catholic parish. In 1793, the castle was largely destroyed by French revolutionary troops, with only the chapel and a side wing surviving. Since 1827, the estate has been owned by the Lilier family.
