Habichrigl Castle, a structure in the Mühlviertel region, is located in the village of Riegl, west of Bad Zell. Originally owned by Regensburg around 1200, it is now a privately owned farm that has largely lost its castle-like appearance due to renovations.

History+

The first documented mention of Habichrigl Castle occurred around 1200, when it was owned by Regensburg and served as a fief of the Lords of Kapellen. Around 1280, Heinrich Rigelarus, the judge of Mauthausen, is named as the owner. In 1366, the castle passed to the Habichler family, from whom it received its current name. Documented Habichlers included Friedrich around 1408, Wolf and Konrad around 1438, and Georg around 1483. The latter sold the castle in 1483 to Andres Königsteiner, the parish priest of Zwettl. After further changes of ownership, including to Christoph Walch and Georg von Hoheneck, the property came into the hands of Joachim Stangl von Waldenfels. On July 25, 1596, the Jörger family took possession of the castle.
