Häringe Castle

Häringe was first mentioned in 1278 in a letter from the king Magnus III. 1495 gave the Bishop Conrad Rogge ownership of Sten Sture the Elder (Sten Sture the äldre). After his death in 1503 the property transferred to Sten Sture the Younger (Sten Sture the Yngre). Thereafter inherited his wife's nephew Åke Jöransson (Tott) possession. He was succeeded by his daughter Christian Åkesdotter and 1534 whose husband Peder Larsson (Hård av herrings) and then her second husband Johan Pedersson (Bååt). 1625 the property transferred to the General Gustav Horn. He built from 1651-1657 the present castle. Gustav died in 1657 and the castle was inherited by his daughter Agneta. 1696 came into the possession of her granddaughter Wrede. 1730 inherited the castle her daughter Hedvig Catharina Lillie and 1754 Carl Julius De la Gardie. This was insolvent by his extravagant lifestyle and so the castle was pledged. 1769 bought General Fabian Löwen Castle. Until 1929 the castle was owned by the family. August Trolle Löwen sold the property to Torsten Kreuger. 1934 bought the industrialist Axel Wenner-Gren and his wife Marguerite Wenner-Gren the castle. In that time many famous visitors, the castle pegs - Greta Garbo, Danny Kaye, Josephine Baker, Karl Gerhard and Zarah Leander. Axel Wenner-Gren and his wife Marguerite are buried under a monument near the east wing. After Axel Wenner-Gren death Birger Strid sold all the furnishings of the Castle. Thereafter bought Olle Hartwig the Castle. From 1979-1986, the castle was owned by Sven Philip-Sorensen. Thereafter, the property transferred to the brothers Stig and Olle Hartwig. After a long search, they could buy back a large part of the old furniture. They set up in the castle a hotel and conference center.
