Hagenberg Castle

Hagenberg Castle was first mentioned around 1370, when it was owned by Eberhard Stadler. The complex changed hands multiple times, including the families of Kapellen, Zwingenstein, and Schießenberger, who expanded the building into a castle. Later, the Hohenecks followed, adding a burial chapel in 1610. Through marriage, the castle passed to the Schallenbergs and later to Egon Gotthard Maurer von Hohenberg, who had the castle chapel built. In the 18th century, it passed to the Wöbers, who completed the castle church, and then to the Counts Thürheim. Under the Dürkheims, who took over the castle in the 19th century, it acquired its current appearance, including the tower from 1892. After the death of the last Count Dürkheim in 1928, the castle began to decay, exacerbated by the Soviet occupation after World War II and an earthquake in 1972.
