Haidenburg Castle

The origins of the castle complex are attributed to a vassal of Bishop Patrick of Regensburg. Around 1160, Haidenburg passed to the noble free lords of Kamm, who named themselves after their new possession, Hals, from 1189 and were elevated to imperial counts in 1280. After the death of the last of the Hals family, Leopold von Hals, in 1375, a dispute over the inheritance erupted, which was settled in 1379. The Landgraves of Leuchtenberg received Haidenburg, among other properties, but sold it in 1423 to Knight Johann von Frauenberg. After the extinction of the Frauenberg male line in 1508, the castle came into the possession of Alban von Closen, remaining with his family until the 18th century. In 1608, Wolf Friedrich von Closen had the medieval castle demolished and rebuilt in the Renaissance style.
