Haindorf Castle

The origins of Haindorf Castle lie in the Feldmühle (Field Mill), first documented in 1624, though its roots are believed to extend to the Loisbachmühle (Loisbach Mill) of 1407. Owned by Peter Hann, the estate passed to Reichard Streun von Schwarzenau in 1582. After frequent changes of ownership, the Counts of Grundemann acquired the castle from 1680 to 1876. Under Leopold Popper von Podraghi and later Baron Sales, the building fell into severe disrepair but was restored by heraldist Friedrich Graf Lanjus von Wellenburg. Following devastation by Soviet occupation soldiers in 1945 and subsequent use as company housing, the State of Lower Austria purchased the castle in 1973 and extensively renovated it by 1978.
