Hainewalde Castle

The New Hainewalde Castle is located in the Saxon municipality of Hainewalde. It is owned by the neighboring municipality of Großschönau. The Hainewalde Castle Association is committed to its preservation and sustainable usage concepts, as well as the tourist marketing of the building.

From 1749 to 1755, the castle was built by the Electoral-Prussian Chamberlain Samuel Friedrich von Kanitz and solemnly inaugurated on June 17, 1755. In 1781, due to multiple lightning strikes, the castle received a lightning rod, making it one of the first buildings in Upper Lusatia to have one. This is also visible in the historical view of the castle from 1840. In 1882/83, extensive remodeling work took place and the Baroque elements were removed. In 1927, Moritz Joachim Ernst von Kyaw sold the castle to the municipality of Großschönau. From March 26 to August 10, 1933, the castle served as the Hainewalde concentration camp for protective custody, and from 1933 to 1945 as a military training camp.

Partial use as a residential building continued until 1972, and it stood empty from 1972 to 2004. In 2000, the "Association for the Preservation of the Kanitz-Kyaw Castle Hainewalde e. V." was founded, which began the renovation of the east wing in 2007.

In 2013, part of the film Grand Budapest Hotel was shot at Hainewalde Castle.
