Hainfeld Castle

The first documented reference to a fortified building dates back to 1275. With Ulrich der Hevuelder, the lords of Hainfeld residing here are first mentioned in 1305.

In 1332, the then modest manor came into the possession of Ulrich Winkler through marriage. In the second half of the 16th century, the Winkler family replaced it with a fortified castle. Its purpose was to protect the Raabtal, which was open to the east, from Hungarian incursions. In 1632, Hainfeld came into the possession of the Counts Khiesl, who sold it in 1719 to Wenzel Carl Graf Purgstall. In 1773, the chapel was moved to the north wing. Johanna Anna, the widow of the last Count Purgstall, bequeathed the castle in 1835 to Josef Freiherr von Hammer.
