On the site of today's castle, Haldenrain Castle stood in the Middle Ages. The castle was princely and was granted in 1244 by Duke Friedrich II to the Styrian scribe Wittigo.

After his murder, his brother Rüdiger became the owner of the castle. The later feudal lords named themselves after the fortress, Lords of Halbenrain.
