Halbturn Castle
Schloss Halbturn is a baroque palace complex in Halbturn, Burgenland.
The palace was built between 1701 and 1711 by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt as a hunting lodge for Emperor Charles VI. Under his daughter Maria Theresia, it was rebuilt by court architect Franz Anton Hillebrandt and became the summer residence of Albert of Saxony-Teschen and Archduchess Marie Christine as governors in Hungary. Frescoes by Franz Anton Maulbertsch also date from this period.
Since 1955, the palace was owned by Baron Paul Waldbott-Bassenheim (a descendant of the Habsburgs), who had leased it to the provincial government. Since Waldbott-Bassenheim's death in 2008, the estate, including viticulture and winery, has been managed by his nephew and adopted son Markus Königsegg-Aulendorf and his wife Philippa, née Waldburg-Zeil-Hohenems. The rooms in the palace are also used as an exhibition venue and for the Halbturn Palace Concerts.
