Hallegg Castle

Hallegg Castle is a castle essentially dating from the 16th century, located in the northwest of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, the capital of Carinthia. It stands on a mountain slope that descends to the east.
The first documented mention of Hallegg dates back to 1213, when the castle of the ministeriales Gerhardus and Albertus de Haileke was named. At the end of the 13th century, Heidenreich Ottlin and Albert, ducal ministeriales, are mentioned as owners. In 1433, Siegmund Roggendorfer was enfeoffed with Hallegg, and in 1485, Konrad Färber.
In 1535, Hallegg was acquired by Christoph Welzer. His family initiated the transformation of the castle into a palace; it was first rebuilt by Moritz Welzer in 1546 and enlarged by Viktor Welzer in 1576. The castle remained in the possession of the Welser family until the 19th century, then passed to the Goess family, and subsequently changed owners frequently. Restorations took place in 1929 (repair), 1953/54 (courtyard), and 1996 (exterior restoration). The castle is now privately owned and is used as a hotel and restaurant.
Architectural Description+
Hallegg Castle is a large, irregular building. The structure is castle-like, with wings arranged around two courtyards. The facades are unadorned, and the rows of windows are irregular.
To the west of the complex lies a representative residential wing with a high hip roof. This wing was built under Viktor Welzer. In the barrel-vaulted Knights' Hall on the first floor, there is a marble inscription tablet stating that Viktor Welzer and Eberstein and Hallegg and Lemberg and his wife Elisabeth Khevenhüller had the wing built. The couple had already built Welzenegg Castle. To the east, the two-story arcaded courtyard adjoins. In the spandrels of the arches are sgraffiti, dated to 1547, which show, among other things, the coats of arms of the Welzer and Khevenhüller families, as well as the year 1213. The courtyard forms an irregular, elongated pentagon. To the east, an arched, vaulted access leads into the southeast wing of the castle, which was probably built under Moritz Welzer. On the north side of the arcaded courtyard, the medieval core of the complex is hook-shaped, with a gate tower added to its north side under Moritz Welzer. Northeast of it lies the second inner courtyard, which is bordered on the north and east by three-story arcades. At the northeast corner of the courtyard is the chapel tower supported by consoles. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Francis and was first mentioned in 1616. The frescoes in the chapel, created in 1749, are not preserved.
