Hallegg Castle

The first documented mention of Hallegg dates back to 1213, when it was referred to as a castle owned by the ministeriales Gerhardus and Albertus de Haileke. By the end of the 13th century, Heidenreich Ottlin and Albert, ducal ministeriales, were the proprietors. In 1433, Siegmund Roggendorfer was enfeoffed with Hallegg, followed by Konrad Färber in 1485. A turning point occurred in 1535 with its acquisition by Christoph Welzer. His family was instrumental in transforming the fortress into a castle, with Moritz Welzer undertaking initial renovations in 1546 and Viktor Welzer expanding the complex in 1576. The castle remained in the possession of the Welzer family until the 19th century, then passed to the Goess family, and subsequently changed hands frequently. Extensive restorations took place in 1929, 1953/54, and most recently in 1996.

Hallegg Castle is located in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, specifically in the Wölfnitz-Hallegg district, within the city of Klagenfurt in Carinthia, Austria. It stands at an elevation of approximately 490 meters above sea level on a mountain slope that descends eastward.
