Haltli Castle (Mollis)

School

Haltli Castle in Mollis, Canton Glarus, is an impressive example of stately architecture and a remarkable sight in the Swiss Alpine region. It stands out due to its Baroque conception and its inspiration from French castle constructions.

History+

Between 1782 and 1784, Haltli Castle was built by order of Konrad Schindler. Schindler, who had completed architectural training in Paris, incorporated his knowledge into the construction of this ambitious project. Inspired by French Baroque palaces, particularly the Palace of Marly, he chose a U-shaped arrangement with a main building and two flanking dependencies. This construction method, reflecting a clear absolutist structure, was a novelty in the Glarus region, apart from the Freuler Palace and Näfels Town Hall. The castle changed owners several times until 1911, when it was acquired by the Cantonal Charitable Society and converted into a school for people with disabilities.

Location+

Haltli Castle is located in Mollis in the Canton of Glarus, Switzerland, at an altitude of approximately 460 meters above sea level. It is prominently situated above the village.

On site+

Today, Haltli Castle serves as a school. The building features a strongly rhythmic main facade across three floors, articulated by window groups and colossal pilasters. A volute gable adorned with a sculpted still life decorates the central entrance. Inside, the floor plan is structured by a continuous corridor, and some rooms, such as the salon on the first floor with Parisian floral wallpaper, have retained their original character. The grand hall on the second floor impresses with Ionic pilasters and stucco work depicting hunting, war, agriculture, arts, and sciences.
