Hammel Castle

The history of Hammel Castle began in 1550 when Wolfgang Paler the Elder was enfeoffed with the estate. Around 1550/60, he initiated the construction of a new castle. The building was likely destroyed in 1648 by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War. The subsequent owner, Raimund Egger, had the castle rebuilt. Through the marriage of his daughter Anna Maria Barbara to Paul III von Stetten, two-thirds of the castle came into the possession of the Augsburg patrician family von Stetten; the remaining share later also fell to this family. Extensive renovations took place in the mid-19th century. In 1891, the east-west oriented wing was extended according to plans by the Augsburg architect Jean Keller, the facade was renewed, and the south gable was adorned with neo-Gothic battlements. Keller also designed the large hall on the upper floor of the east building in a neo-Baroque style.
