Hammeries Castle
Hammeries Castle is located in the municipality of Losenstein in the district of Steyr-Land in Upper Austria (Laussa Str. 25).
Hammeries is first mentioned in the 13th century. The Lords Hammerrieser von Weimar were known by the common name Spitzer; some members of the family are buried in the cemetery of Losenstein. The Hammeriesers belonged to the peasant nobility and had the right to bear arms. Ries refers to the pig iron that was brought from Styria through the Enns Valley on rafts to Steyr for processing (hammer mill).
After the end of iron processing, the Silesian Weaving Mill was established here in 1801. Other owners include the following names: Berger, Ritter von Bans, Jeckel, Winkelhofer, Dalberg, Pittinghofer, and Rudolf Sturm († 1968), succeeded by Johann Maresch.
Architecture+
The castle was originally tripartite, with the buildings unified in 1527 by a centrally located tower. In the tower there is an entrance gate made of marble, designed with an arch. Above the entrance gate are the letters I. P. and A. P., probably a reference to former owners. The first part of the building was the economic wing, the second contained the living quarters for the staff and the lords, and the third was intended for the lords alone. To the right of the entrance gate is an attached half-tower. In the castle courtyard, one finds the coat of arms of the Hammeriesers. Much of the furnishings were stolen during the plague of 1661. In 1742, the kitchen chimney was built. The Hammeries complex includes other buildings that are designed in the same color as the castle.
