In the municipality of Apelern in Lower Saxony, Germany, lies Hammerstein Castle, a historic castle complex. The structure, distinguished by a blend of late Gothic and ancient elements, is situated on an island and remains in private ownership to this day.

History+

The Billungian estate of Apelern, first mentioned in 1055, experienced numerous changes of ownership. Around 1550, the estate passed as a fief of the Counts of Holstein-Schaumburg to Baron Jobst von Münchhausen. After the extinction of this line, the Schaumburg Chancellor Anton Wietersheim acquired the property in 1580, after it had been converted into a free court by Count Otto IV of Holstein-Schaumburg in 1556. Wietersheim enlarged the estate. The current single-winged castle was built in 1590 and is a four-story building with a gabled roof and a projecting polygonal spiral staircase tower. In 1673, Major General Friderich Christoph Freiherr v. Hammerstein-Gesmold acquired the manor and castle.
