Hansenberg Castle

Hansenberg Castle can look back on a long and eventful history. It was built on the grounds of a vineyard on the Hansenberg by the local senior school councilor Johannes de Laspée, who was a student of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi. De Laspée had planned an orphanage combined with a Pestalozzi school. However, after its completion in 1824 and Laspée's death in 1825, the building was not used for its intended purpose. It was sold and for a long time primarily used privately. Under changing owners, it served, among other things, as a residence, vineyard, and restaurant with a hotel. Several alterations and extensions were made.

The Federal Republic of Germany acquired the site after the Second World War. The subsequently greatly expanded complex was used as a disaster relief school and, after being taken over by the State of Hesse, as an outpost of the Hessian State Firefighting School.

With the restructuring of the Hessian State Firefighting School, the outpost at Hansenberg Castle was abandoned in 2000. With the efforts of the state government to establish a boarding school for upper secondary education, the main and ancillary buildings were converted and extended for 20 million euros. The boarding houses were completely newly built. In autumn 2003, the boarding school was inaugurated and school operations began.
