Hardenberg Castle
Hardenberg House is a 14th-century moated castle, hidden in old forests, to the right of the country road from Anholt to Gendringen. The estate is located on the Issel, precisely on the German-Dutch border.
In 1310, the castle was granted as a fief by his father. Dietrich van Zuilen (Dirck van Zulen) first appears in the annals as Lord of Hardenberg in 1347. The house must have been built in the 14th century as a border fortress in the form of a square building with corner towers and an outwork, surrounded by moats. Today, two wings of the original building remain. According to a 2009 survey, Hardenberg House is now entirely located in Germany; previously, the forecourt was in the County of Zutphen.
