Harmating Castle is a historical structure in the Bavarian municipality of Egling. It stands on a moraine hill at the edge of the Isar valley and is notable for its preservation in its original state, both inside and out.

History+

The origins of Harmating Castle date back to the 13th century, when the Lords of Harmating, first mentioned around 1140, presumably built a tower castle. Around 1300, it was owned by the Counts of Hohenwaldeck. Ownership changed hands several times, including to the Lords of Egling, the Lords of Ross, and the Tyrolean Tänzl von Tratzberg family. By 1531 at the latest, the castle passed to the Munich patrician family Barth, who were granted noble freedom and lower jurisdiction in 1596 and elevated to the rank of baron in 1681.
