Hartberg Castle, also known as Paar Castle, is a castle complex in the Styrian district capital of Hartberg in Austria. It is surrounded by parts of the old town fortifications.

History+

The origins of the castle date back to 1147, when it was first documented as Hartberg Castle. From the 12th century onwards, this complex served to secure the border and was part of a network of fortifications built by the Traungauer family. The present-day town of Hartberg developed around the castle. The complex experienced numerous changes of ownership and warlike events, including raids by Andreas Baumkircher in 1469 and the conquest by King Matthias Corvinus in 1487.
