Harzgerode Castle is mentioned for the first time in 1384. From 1398 to 1535, the Counts of Stolberg were predominantly the feudal lords of the castle and town. Afterwards, Harzgerode became the administrative center for the Princes of Anhalt for their possessions in the Harz region.
